Complete In Christ

Will Huddleson

If you are like me, you’ve probably heard or maybe even asked the question, “Why would God?”. In a world seemingly full of confusion, tragedy, tensions and uncertainty…throughout history the question has been pondered. “Why would God allow this tragedy?” “Why would God not just heal this person?” “Why would God not just take control?” This list goes on and on. Since God is sovereign, why not? After his wife passed, even C.S. Lewis wrote, “Where is God?”

Romans 8:22 points out that “For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together even until now.”
First, we must recognize that we live in a fallen world. God did create a world in perfect harmony yet even then he gave a very specific provision. This one provision is completely necessary to express and exhibit true love. He gave us free will. Love isn’t pure and perfect without allowing free will and God is love and refused to withhold that love by creating robots that were without freedom. Man-made a choice and the result was sin and destruction. In light of this may be a better question would be, “Why would God?” But, not why would He allow. Rather, why would He, despite our failures, love us anyway.

Again, perfect love. Perfect love allows free will but also delivers, makes a way and is unconditional. Maybe our focus shouldn’t be on the tragedies of this evil and fallen world but rather on His abounding love and provision. 1 John 4:18 reminds us, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear…” Then Romans 5:5 tells us, “And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Just a few chapters later in Romans 8:35-37 we read, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword. As it is written for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered sheep to be slaughtered. NO, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” History has spoken to some very trying, confusing, and difficult times and we sure find ourselves in the midst of one of those times. Rather than focusing on the most current or recent events, maybe we should instead, live above those things…maybe we should instead choose to accept the truth that we are more than conquerors. Maybe we should recon the truth that is taught to us in scripture that as believers, we are made complete in Christ. Colossians 2:10 “and in Him, you have been made complete and He is the head over all rule and authority. Live in the completed work of Jesus Christ and your completeness in Him today…go live above the concerns and conversations of the present time…go be a conqueror.
