The Grace In Which We Stand
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:1-2.
By Romans 5:1-2, we know that faith is our pathway to justification by God and a result of that justification is peace with God through Christ. But what happens in justification by faith does not stop at peace, it also includes access by faith into the “grace in which we stand.”
Do not miss this! Our salvation, by grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9), believing the Gospel (1st Corinthians 15:3-4) resulted in peace and grace access by which God placed us in a new standing, one of a union with Christ. But what does this union with Christ mean and what does it do?
The simplest answer is a before/after contrast. Before salvation, our standing was union with Adam. Adam was the created head of the human race, who chose sin over God and fell. As his progeny, our union with Adam meant that everything that was true of Adam (fallen, sinful, condemned) was true of us. In justification by faith and the resulting peace with and access to God, He took us out of union with Adam and placed us into union with Christ. In that union, now everything that is true of Christ is true of us!
As a result of this union we “stand in grace” (totally forgiven, new creations, accepted, and complete) such that we can truly “rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” And this standing is not a someday thing, it is NOW thing!
Rested belief in the truth of these verses is a GAME CHANGER!
